The Challenge: Microsoft Office 2007 was due to be launched Q1 2007 and introduced a new XML format to save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files completely differently. This new XML file structure will eventually become the dominant and widely adopted office file format, as it is the default format for Office 2007. Previous versions of Office can support the new format after installing a patch. Due to the long lead times involved, "Top of the line" S60 phones, even as late as 2009, will not support the Office 2007 format out of the box. How does Nokia remain competitive and offer attachment support to the dominant file format?
The Solution: Quickoffice develops a plug and play solution to support the new XML format Quickmanager allows user to easily discover the upgrade to support the new XML format. Using a clean and simple interface, the user is able to securely download and install the update. Quickmanager allows Nokia to offer attachment support for the latest and dominant format as soon as the solution is available, while other platforms (Windows Mobile, Palm, etc) are potentially years behind.
- End User - Edit Office documents while traveling:
A UK-based employee was flying to JFK. Using a Nokia E90 he was able to retrieve his e-mail at the last minute (40 minutes after shutting down his laptop), add review comments offline to a time-sensitive press release which had to be returned to headquarters before close of business that day and queue it for sending. When he landed at JFK and turned the phone on, a connection was established and the document sent well before the deadline. By contrast, by the time Immigration formalities were complete and he reached his hotel with WiFi access for his laptop, it was nearly 3 hours later. This is an example of "editing at the point of need", and the value of this capability will continue to grow as the market advances.
